is very sparsely populated. Thus, you can find the long-lost untouched nature here:
a unique plants and animals ecosystem far away from the noise of the ‘industrial
tourism’, where you can explore the far widths of the silent lakes and deep
forests. You can stay here in one of the numerous holiday

Masuria - the sailing paradise |
Undiscovered treasures of Masuria | |||||||
The biggest attraction in Masuria is, of course, the almost infinite number of lakes. The exact number is unknown, but there should be at least 3 thousands of them. Accordingly, Masuria is in the first line of choice for tourists who want to go sailing and windsurfing. Many lakes are connected with each other, creating enormous areas with routes of more than 100 km. The longest route in Masuria, and for that matter also in Europe, is longer than 250 km, stretches from the Mamry Lake to the Sniardwy Lake and offers a water area of more than 600 km². Tourists can also take advantage of the well developed infrastructure with many berths and anchorages, small harbours, boat rentals, cottages and other accommodation facilities. The most important water sport centres are Mikolajki and Gizycko. Other popular places include Elk, Mragowo, Ruciane-Nida, Szczytno and Wegrzewo. The sailing season begins here with the first ice. The Masuria region specialises not only in sailing in the summer, but also in ice-yachting. The cold and windy winters in Masuria create best conditions for this unforgettable experience. Even amateurs can reach speeds of 60-70 km/h and professionals easily reach double. There are ice-yachting schools for beginners. Winter is also the time for ice-skating, cross-country skiing and ice-fishing.
Masuria is also a popular place for canoeing. The rivers and canals which
connect the numerous lakes create many canoe routes. Many of them are suitable
for beginners, although some are very long, offering routes of up to a dozen days. The
most popular river is Krutynia, which lies in a very beautiful, park-like
landscape. Fans of untouched, wild nature can take a tour on the Biebrza River.

![]() Masuria is also a great place for bathing, swimming and diving. The water quality is superb. The picturesque landscape also invites to other activities, such as wandering, cycling, golfing, horse riding and fishing. The crystal clear lakes and rivers are full of fish. However, a valid fishing licence is required. The impenetrable forests of Masuria are also full of wild animals and thus a perfect place for hunting. The hunting tradition here is many hundred years old and thanks to good hunting policy the animal population has been kept at an optimal level since medieval times. In Masuria you can typically hunt for deer, moose and wild boar. There are also many other aspects which make Masuria such
an interesting place to visit. These include numerous castles and palaces, of which most were built by Prussia and the Teutonic Order. Among those castles is also the biggest brick
castle in Europe - Malbork - as well as various other ones, e.g. in Rogosze and Sorwity.
Scattered all over Masuria are also many sacred buildings, such as the famous pilgrimage site in
Swieta Lipka. Interesting museums can be found in most cities (e.g. Elblag, Olsztyn, Frombork). You can also attend many cultural events here, including
the Europe’s biggest knight festival in Grunwald. What mustn’t be forgotten is also
the unique Elblag Canal. The difference in the water level on the route of 81 km between Elblag and
Ostroda amounts to 100 meters and is overcome by a remarkable system of locks
and tracks between lakes. Boats passing this canal are partly carried on rail trailers.
To see boats ‘cruising on land is an unforgettable view that most visitors to Masuria have
never seen before.
